My grandma had the greenest thumb of anyone I've ever known. She had flowers everywhere. Along the front of the house, the sides...the back and behind the garage. They were everywhere. She had planted flowers for every season so that there was always something in bloom. Those who were lucky enough to know her had at some point enjoyed her flowers. So at her funeral the chapel couldn't hold all the flowers people had sent. They were around the front and along the sides of the room. The smell was almost overwhelming.
5 years ago I was helping my mom clean out my grandparents house (my grandpa was still there at the time) and I was emptying out the freezer they had in the basement. To my surprise I found a bag that had little rolled up paper towels inside. Curious, I took them upstairs and begin to unwrap them one by one. They were seeds that my grandma had saved every season when her flowers would die. Hundreds...thousands of them, each kind held together in it's own paper towel.
I took them to my mom's and planted a few from each bundle. Amazingly after 5 years they actually bloomed. I planted them outside but it was too late in the year and soon the snow overtook them. I've always said that when I had a house of my own I would plant them again so that I could have a part of my grandma where ever I was. The last time my mom came to Texas she brought me that bag. SO...tonight I have planted a few of each seed. I have no idea what kind of seeds they are. I taped a few of each kind to a stick and put at the front of each row. It's been so long, I have no idea if they will even come to life but can you imagine if they do!
My grandma has been gone for almost 11 years but her flowers are still blooming over on Bristol Rd. Each season a new bloom that has been coming back in that same spot year after year. Hopefully I will have the same luck. I would give anything to be able to ask her for advice...
Ryan picked me up this mini green house. This is the same one he is using for his trees...yes trees.
The bag from the freezer...
If anyone out there has some advice for me it would be much appreciated! If you can see that I'm not doing something right just speak up and drop a comment on this post!
If I see any action in the tray I'll post it. Let's hope it hasn't been too long for them to sprout!!!
